Schools tile projects

Edinburgh Ceramics has co-operated with several local schools to encourage ceramic projects with children. School teachers' unfamiliarity with ceramic materials, and the varied abilities of children are addressed by well-designed projects and practical demonstrations of the processes involved.

This ceramic self-portrait project enabled each pupil to draw directly onto a ceramic tile. Additional tiles were drawn by the pupils to include school staff in the project. Every class was represented in the completed, fired work, displayed as a series of tile-panels mounted on the walls of a stairway within the school. The newly installed tiles looked very impressive, prompting a decision to repaint the whole stairway.

As an alternative to the hands-on experience for children shown here, Edinburgh Ceramics' digital ceramic printing process allows non-ceramic artwork by each participating child to be reproduced and fired permanently onto ceramic wall tiles.
